Eating healthy on the go is a challenge. Grabbing unhealthy snacks and fast food when you’re in a rush is easy. But these options are often high in calories, unhealthy fats, and sodium. On the other hand, eating healthy foods such as fruits, vegetables, nuts, and whole grains can provide essential nutrients, vitamins, and minerals, supporting your overall health and wellness. Healthy eating can also help manage weight, improve energy levels, and boost mood and mental clarity. So, there are benefits. How do you do it? Here are five food options and four tips to help you choose the healthiest foods on the run.
HOW THE FRIDGE MAKES THINGS DIFFICULT
The biggest problem with busy schedules is finding the time to prepare meals or sit down and eat. When you’re under a time crunch, and the refrigerator refuses to feed you, you may turn to unhealthy snacks and fast food. That is my biggest downfall… the refrigerator! Actually, my biggest downfall is not having time, and the fridge becomes an accomplice. When I’m under pressure with nothing in the refrigerator, I go to processed foods and gobble up unhealthy fats, sodium, and empty calories.Â
The trick to changing this behavior is having healthy food options available. “Available” can be a nearby grocery store and even pre-packaged items because convenience can change unhealthy eating options. If the trick is having healthy food options that are readily available, how do you do that?
THE TRUTH ABOUT CONVENIENCE
Let’s get into that, but first let’s repeat something you know. It becomes that gentle reminder of, “Oh yeah, that’s right!” So, your goal is to avoid processed snacks and foods, sugary drinks, high-fat and high-sodium snack food options. These foods are high in calories and empty in the essential nutritents you need to run your body.Â
Processed snacks and foods are often high in unhealthy fats, added sugars adding calories, but not nutrition. They contain many different preservatives and chemicals that are not food. Sugary drinks, such as soda and sports drinks, are high in calories and added sugars, leading to weight gain and increasing the risk of type 2 diabetes and other health problems. High-fat and high-sodium options, such as fast food and fried snacks, are also unhealthy and can lead to heart disease, high blood pressure, and other health problems. By avoiding these foods and drinks, you make healthier food choices, improve your overall health and well-being, and reduce the risk of health problems later in life.
5 HEALTHIEST FOOD CHOICES
So, what can you eat on the go? Here are five healthiest foods that easily fit into your busy lifestyle and provide the nutrition your body craves to maintain peak performance.
- Fresh fruits and vegetables are a healthy option for on-the-go eating as they are low in calories and high in essential nutrients such as vitamins, minerals, and fiber. They can help improve overall health and provide sustained energy throughout the day.
- Nuts and seeds are a nutritious and portable snack that are high in healthy fats, protein, and fiber. They can help regulate blood sugar levels, keep you feeling full, and provide essential nutrients for good health.
- Yogurt and cheese are great sources of protein and calcium and can be a quick and convenient snack. Choose plain yogurt or low-fat cheese options to keep the calorie and fat content low.
- Whole grain snacks and sandwiches are a healthier alternative to processed and refined grain products. Whole grains are a good source of fiber, vitamins, and minerals and can help regulate blood sugar levels, improve digestion, and support heart health.
- Lean protein sources, such as grilled chicken, turkey, and tofu, are great for on-the-go eating. They are low in fat and high in protein, which can help regulate appetite, repair and build muscle, and support overall health.Â
These options have the added benefit of coming in easy-to-use pre-packaged forms, or they can be quick to make, like a fresh sandwich or salad. That makes it easy to have a healthy meal while on the go. Do you want more information on eating healthy?
