I want to share something with you that’s been helpful for understanding emotions—not just mentally, but physically too. You know how sometimes anxiety or fear can come out of nowhere, even when everything seems “fine” on the surface? In Chinese Medicine, those feelings are actually considered survival emotions, and they’re directly tied to two key organs in the body: the Heart (anxiety) and the Kidneys (fear).
It’s part of a bigger framework called the Heaven-Earth-Human model.
In this view, Heaven is represented by the Heart—our connection to spirit, inspiration, and joy.
Earth is represented by the Kidneys—our roots, stability, and ability to keep going through challenges.
And we, as humans, live in between the two. We rely on both to feel whole and balanced.
When these organs are in harmony, we feel more centered and resilient. But when that balance is off—whether from stress, overwork, or even things like poor sleep or diet—emotions like fear and anxiety can surface. It’s not just “in your head”; it’s your body signaling that it needs attention and support.
Because modern life is so fast-paced and full of uncertainty, those survival emotions are getting triggered more often than they used to. And when that happens, the body often shifts into a kind of protection mode.
That’s where a second layer of emotions can show up:
-
Anger and frustration often come from the Liver, which in Chinese Medicine is like the body’s protector—always trying to move things forward or fight for what’s right.
-
Overthinking and worry are linked to the Spleen, which works to ground us and help us process. But when it’s overworked, the mind can start racing.
-
Grief and sadness come from the Lungs and often sit underneath everything else. They can be hard to feel fully, especially if the body is still trying to guard against deeper emotional pain.
These emotions aren’t random. They’re layered, and often the body is using one emotion to protect you from another—especially if it hasn’t felt safe to process what’s really going on.
But here’s the good news:
As you start to care for your body and its energy—through rest, nutrition, acupuncture, mindfulness, or even just awareness—those emotional layers begin to shift. Sometimes, you’ll feel irritation start to ease. Then the worry might quiet down. And eventually, those deeper feelings like grief, fear, and anxiety begin to rise and clear in a way that feels more manageable.
It’s a process. But it’s a wise one.
If you’re carrying emotional baggage that feels heavy or hard to put down, know this: there are ways to gently release it. Taoist Classical techniques offer powerful, time-tested tools to help calm the nervous system, support the organs, and guide the body back into a more balanced rhythm—one where your emotions no longer run the show.
If you’re curious about how this might work for you, I offer a free 15-minute consult to talk through what you’re experiencing and whether this approach might be a good fit. No pressure—just a conversation.
You don’t have to keep dragging this around. You’re allowed to feel lighter.
